LUNAR GALA 2021
'COLLECTIVA'
Lunar Gala is an annual Carnegie Mellon student-run event and the largest fashion show in Pittsburgh. It features student fashion designers creating lines centered around a yearly theme, culminating in an hour-long runway show.
For the 2020-21 show, I worked with a team of designers to create ‘digital spaces’ and motion graphics themed for each line. This also meant creating a stage environment for the models, videographers, and viewers to interact with the graphics in an engaging but non-disruptive way.

ANIMATIONS FOR ALL LINES
DESIGN FOR PRODUCTION,
FABRICATION, & PERFORMANCE
Lunar Gala had very specific space constraints, with technical needs that included model movement, equipment placement, and room for crew. Designing for this meant mapping out the space coverage for lighting, video, projectors, and line variations.

LIGHT AND PROJECTOR MAPPING

Within these limitations of the performance, a series of tarps were designed in collaboration with the production team to project our motion graphics onto during the show.
Once modeled and mapped out, we were able to start dividing up the panels of each animation to different tarps, making a diverse but connected series of graphics for each line.

'DIGITAL SPACES' & MOTION DESIGN
The motion graphics were divided up into the 12 lines of the show, along with transitions between lines.
Our team began by exploring different forms and movements that could operate as both individual ‘spaces’ and have surfaces that create motion graphics in their details.
Each graphic was a 3d modeled space whose shape, visuals, and textures were abstracted versions of the fabrics and materials found in its respective line.
Paying close attention to the thematics and visuals of the line allowed us to reinterpret the physical into a digital space and graphic.

The motion of each graphic was as important as the visuals, not so rapid that it distracts from the show but dynamic enough to blend with and emphasize the model’s movements.
TEAM COLLABORATION & OTHER MEDIA
Working in both an individual and system of teams had us balancing internal communication of ideas with adherence to the larger Lunar Gala brand.
Our spatial designs had to fit with Production team limits and our graphics had to fit to that same space while acting as assets for Web, Print, and Promotional teams.

TEAM ORGANIZATION & EARLY EXPLORATIONS

Lunar Gala required a multimedia experience that existed on digital, physical, real-time, and long-term media. Designing for so many different goals meant keeping our themes and audience in mind constantly, always reminding ourselves of what we were trying to convey and to who.
Everything we made needed to have clarity for any audience member regardless of how or when they were experiencing it.
Working within such a tight, specific performance on a large series of teams also meant not being too precious with our ideas, as concepts were constantly being prototyped, tested, and iterated on to fit the constraints.
